The Saw Series

I would not, under normal circumstances, review only part of a story, but I don't mind reviewing a series all at once if they are all part of the same story. (Just wait till you see my Bourne review.) With the Saw series, I wanted to wait until I'd seen V to cover it.
Gore fests and torture porn do not impress me. Blood for the sake of blood can occasionally be... okay, I was about to tell a big fat lie. It's not entertaining at all. Blood, for me at least, is a primal substance that deserves some level of respect, and seeing how much of it (fake or otherwise) you can plaster on walls or what-have-you... just not good times.
But this story... this story did impress me. The trick to gauging whether or not the story was overly gory is to visualize it without the blood. Is there any way to express this part of the human experience without this much viscera being spread all over the place...?
No.
The story itself is fascinating. A hidden manipulator named Jigsaw kidnaps people and faces them with true and real threats of death in order to test their will. If they're willing to go through pain and blood-letting, they can live, and by doing so, they are transformed into something greater, something in awe and appreciation of their own lives instead of unconscious and malicious for malice' sake.
The first movie is a paint-can – a limited number of people trapped in a single room, given a specific circumstance, okay, GO. And the situation was so fascinating that we were even able to overlook Wesley and his ridiculous accent. The methods of torture and death are truly unique, but the really interesting parts are the unique means of torture and death that aren't built by Jigsaw. The second movie expands its horizons a little bit, going more “Real World” the way we'd like that other show to go. The third... now it starts to get deep, the story is unfolding. The fourth – holy crap, I did not see that coming! The fifth... okay, the fifth does drop off just a teeny tiny bit, but it's still worth watching.
The ratings go up and down a bit for each movie individually, but I think that as a series up to V, it gets a solid 4.5. The masterful movie is not just one that rivets you with morbid fascination – it's the one that tweaks a little corner of your soul and forces you to ask, “What would I do in that situation? Would I have the will to survive?”

I think Saw does that to the point that most who would not watch that sorta movie will like what they see.
I'd also like to add to your very nice post that the test are also directly related to our inner imperfections in a way to correct our own problems in the process of scolding us to our own misgivings. You probably said that better then me though.
Anyway, my drink of choice, not for the movie but for reading my post will have to be the default of vodka and grapefruit juice
Have a wonderful movie watching week
