Movie Review: The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)
August 28th 2009 17:55
The 40 Year Old Virgin is the standard guy comedy (ton of sex humor). The film is about Andy (Steve Carell), a stock supervisor at an electronics store. Despite being 40, Andy exhibits many childlike behaviors. For example, Andy doesn’t drive so he rides his bike to and from work. Andy also collects action figures. Another similarity between Andy and a young child is Andy has never had sex. One night, while playing poker, Andy’s co-workers learn he is a virgin. His co-workers make it their mission to get Andy laid. Hilarity ensues as Andy’s co-workers take turns giving Andy advice on women.
Steve Carell’s acting is spot on in The 40 Year Old Virgin. His extraordinary acting helps to create many memorable scenes. Some of these scenes include Andy describing a sexual encounter he never actually had, Andy trying to pick up a woman at a bar using his “peripherals”, and Andy getting his chest hair waxed off.
The only element of the movie I dislike is the length. The 40 Year Old Virgin is over two hours long which is pretty long for a comedy. Most comedies don’t last longer than an hour and a half. As consequence of how long The 40 Year Old Virgin is the plot develops slowly in the middle of the film.
In conclusion I would still recommend The 40 Year Old Virgin to anyone who enjoys comedies packed with sex humor. Steve Carell’s acting is worth having to sit through the parts of the film that drag on.
