An aspiring writer becomes friends with a temperamental doctor and his holocaust survivor girlfriend. There’s a great story here, but one soaked in hokey romantic Americana. There are meaty roles for Streep and Kline, leaving nothing for McNicol – and he’s the main character! Only half successful.
