Celebrity Birthday: Sandra Oh!
July 17th 2007 17:00
Time for another celebrity birthday tribute! Today, the nod goes to Asian-American acting princess Sandra Oh who was born on July 20th, 1971 in Ottawa, Canada.
Born to Korean immigrants, Sandra began acting at an early age and was very passionate about it. At the age of 15, she began her career in television, and at 18 she landed the title role in the film The Diary of Evelyn Lau, facing down large competition for the role. Her performance landed her with a Gemini nomination for Best Actress and the 1994 Cannes FIPA d’Or for Best Actress as well. The following year, Sandra won a Genie award (the equivalent to our America’s Oscar) for playing the role of a young Chinese-Canadian woman in Double Happiness.
This success prompted Sandra to move to Los Angeles, where she landed the role of Rita Wu in HBO’s comedic series Arli$$. This role was acknowledged with the Cable Ace Award for Best Actress in a comedy. She was on the show for six seasons.
Sandra’s popularity increased with roles in Under The Tuscan Sun and Sideways. She won another Genie for her film Last Night. In 2001, she won Best Performance at the Milan Film Festival for her starring role as a stripper in Michael Radford’s Dancing at the Blue Iguana. Presently, her fame is known as Dr. Cristina Yang in the hit medical series, Grey’s Anatomy. For this role, she has received an Emmy nomination, won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series (2005), and won a Golden Globe as well.
Other credits include HBO’s Six Feet Under, Judging Amy, Showtime’s Further Tales of the City, Popular, Kung Fu; The Legend Continues, American Dragon: Jake Long, and Odd Job Jack. To date, her most recent film was The Night Listener (2006), in which she acted alongside Robin Williams.
Sandra is a talented and dynamic force in the entertainment industry and is by no means slowing down. I am thankful to have an outstanding talented Asian woman standing toe to toe with everyone on the scene. I only wish her well, and hope she has an outstanding birthday. Happy birthday Sandra Oh!
