Movie Review: Rocky II (1979)

This past weekend Spike TV had a Rocky Balboa marathon. I was able to find enough free time to sit down and enjoy Rocky II. In general, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is an iconic character in pop culture; but why? What separates Rocky from the ordinary? As I watched Rocky II the answer became clear to me.
Rocky Balboa is an iconic pop culture figure because Rocky Balboa is everyman. The Rocky Balboa character is relatable to the viewer. Everyone can sympathize with Rocky in one way or another. For example, I understand the frustration the Rock feels when the doctors tell him he can’t box anymore. I have a mild form of cerebral palsy and throughout my life I’ve been told what I can and can’t do too. I feel what Rocky Balboa feels!
Anyone who takes pride in who they are can sympathize with the Rock in Rocky II because of what Apollo does to attack Balboa’s pride. Rocky couldn’t just sit back and take that. He had to fight back; just like we have to fight back when somebody attacks our pride.
Rocky II is more than just a movie and Rocky Balboa is more than just a movie character. They are inspiration. I know after I was done watching Rocky II that I was motivated to push myself harder, in order to be the best I can be. Watching Rocky II woke up the Italian Stallion in me!
