The Phantom of the Opera
November 2nd 2011 22:34
(1925) Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland. Dir: Rupert Julian.
The Paris Opera House is haunted by a ghostly figure, whose secretly visits a young singer. Pretty melodramatic and often stiffly directed, but art direction’s heavyweight, with fantastic sets and spooky shadows. And there’s Chaney, whose unmasking and appearance as the red death can still raise gasps in a cinema.
