Celebrity Birthday Tribute - Johnny Depp
June 7th 2007 05:17
I was wondering who my next birthday tribute should be, and then I discovered that June 9th is the birthday to lo and behold, Captain Jack Sparrow himself – Johnny Depp! Now, I ask you, how could I turn that down? Let’s find out a little more about Mr. Depp, shall we?
John Christopher Depp II was born in Kentucky and moved to Florida in his teens. Dropping out of school, he got into alcohol and drug abuse. This didn’t prevent him from forming a rock group known as The Kids. After successful gigs with artists such as Iggy Pop, The Kids sought fame and fortune in Los Angeles and relocated. Johnny married the bands make up artist. After struggling to make it with music, he was persuaded by his wife to begin acting.
Johnny’s first movie was Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street. He earned bit parts in Private Resort, and Lady Blue. With the break up of the band, he set his sights on movies and was cast in Oliver Stone’s Platoon. He appeared in the movie Slow Burn. He was then offered the starring role on a new Fox series, “21 Jump Street”. He reluctantly took the role. The series made Johnny Depp a household name.
Depp had the lead role in the movie Cry Baby which caught the eye of an upcoming director. Teaming up with Tim Burton, Johnny next had the lead in Edward Scissorhands. This role made all of Hollywood take notice that this was not just a pretty face, but a versatile and very capable actor. The role brought nothing less than acclaim to him.
His divorce led to Johnny having several romances, almost all highly publicized (remember Winona?) His life was in shambles, and it showed with his arrests for trashing a hotel room and fighting with paparazzi (okay, I can understand fighting with them!). Even so, Depp pushed through with roles in Freddy’s Dead, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny and Joon, Ed Wood, Arizona Dreaming, Nick of Time, and Dead Man. He had the privilege of acting opposite Marlon Brando in Don Juan DeMarco, and Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco.
In 1998, he moved to Paris with his children and began a relationship with Venessa Paradis, a singer. Even so, he was offered roles in films such Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Source, and The 9th Gate. He eagerly accepted the role of Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow which teamed him once again with director Tim Burton. He also appeared in the film Chocolat, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He appeared opposite Penelope Cruz in Blow and was sought out for his role in From Hell.
After a brief sabbatical, Depp blazed onto the screen as one of the most memorable characters in film history, Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. He once again, became a household name. Children and adults alike were all delighted by his lively performance.
Following the ovations from Pirates, Johnny held a small role in Once Upon A Time In Mexico. He captivated audiences in Neverland, and thrilled them in Stephen King’s Secret Window. He again showed his ability in the acclaimed The Libertine.
Always willing to work with Tim Burton, Johnny found himself in the role of Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Corpse Bride allowed Johnny to voice his talent under direction of once again, Tim Burton.
Film viewers were delighted in Depp’s reprisal of the role of Jack Sparrow in the last two movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. To date, Johnny is slated to appear in Benecio Del Toro’s directorial debut, The Rum Diary. He is once again, teaming up with Tim Burton to appear in Sweeney Todd, a remake of the Stephen Sondheim musical and true story of a homicidal barber. He is also to appear in the movie Shantaram opposite Helen Bonham Carter.
Johnny Depp has received his star on the Walk of Fame. He has received MTV movie awards, People’s Choice Awards, Kids Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, a Scream Award, a Courage To Care Award (presented by Los Angeles Children’s Hospital), and nominated for numerous Gold Globe Awards and 2 Oscars.
I just wanted to say, Happy Birthday Johnny! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for your incredible breath of fresh air of talent on to the cinematic screen! Your choice of roles is wonderful, your ability is stellar, and gosh darn it, I’m just gonna say it, you are a down right cutie! But seriously, I respect your talent, and your ability to take risks where so many other movie stars take it safe. You stand head and shoulders above all others in my book. I wish you the best and only prosperity for you and your family in the years to come!
Readers, I invite you to leave comments wishing this true movie star your birthday wishes! (Johnny, if you ever read this…call me…I would love to have a role in one of your movies!) Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We all love you! Oh, and my daughter just wanted me to add that you were "perfect as Jack Sparrow and like, no one, could like, have ever been him as good as you...I love you Johnny Depp!" (She's 10, can you tell?)
Again, readers, I invite you to share your thoughts....

Learning Something Everyday
I also didn't realise that he acted in Nightmare in Elm Street... I guess I just didn't recognise him.
Windows (if I remembered the movie title correctly) actually caught my attention as how good an actor he can be and he was really good... but then Jack Sparrow blew my mind away.
My birthday is just about a week from his. How cool! ^_^
Have a blessed day

Film & TV on DVD
Johnny is indeed a talent...love Dead Man, Fear and Loathing, Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood.
His directorial effort The Brave opposite Marlon Brando was fantastic too.
Johny was the only thing that I enjoyed about Pirates of the Caribbean.
Great post, keep up the good work.
