Review: Idiocracy (2006)

August 31st 2009 15:16
Idiocracy is the brain child of writer Mike Judge, the creative mind behind Office Space, “Beavis & Butthead”, and “King of the Hill”. Idiocracy stars Luke Wilson as Joe Bauers, an average man who participates in an army experiment. As a result of the experiment Joe finds himself 500 years in the future. In the future Joe is no longer average. In fact, intelligence has declined so much Joe has become the smartest man in the world. In the future people water their plants with a sports drink and good television is considered “Ow, My Balls!”, a show where men are kicked in the balls.

Idiocracy did not garner much success in the movie theatres. Idiocracy is pretty much considered a failure within the film industry. The movie doesn’t have fancy special effects or a well developed plot. However, Idiocracy does trigger this philosophical question- could humans become this stupid? In his time Joe didn’t do anything productive, like read and vote. In our world there are plenty of people who don’t read or vote. If intelligent activity continues to decline over the years, what will prevent the population from becoming ignorant?

Idiocracy is not worth purchasing on DVD but if you do get a chance to catch the movie on Comedy Central, watch the film and ask yourself- could this really happen? Then do your part is stop the ignorance.
