Charlie Wilson's War

Charlie Wilson's War
Charlie Wilson's War was directed by Mike Nichols who to the best of my recollection was the creator of the 1996 movie "The Birdcage" starring Robin Williams and Hank Azaria.
Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay, in his most recent past he has worked mostly in television. In his early days he wrote the play and movie "A few good men" featuring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore released in 1992.

Adapted from George Crile's book of the same title, this movie takes the words from the page and brings them to a very entertaining medium and this one doesn't disappoint.

This is based on a true story, which makes most movies true to life. But with added exuberance I am sure. Charlie Wilson was a congressman like no other, with questionable habits and an interesting way of getting things done. He shows an inside look into the happenings of covert operations and shows that our culture even decades ago would pay more attention to sexual or drug scandals, rather than a billion dollar battle/war fought against Afghanistan and the soviets.

I truly recommend this movie, as it is a clever and behind the scenes telling of history and shows us a little about what we are trying to accomplish now. As we are not as covert with our efforts in Afghanistan to this day.

Another reason to watch this new flick, would be to see the performance of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who shines in his unique portrayal of a CIA field agent.

Wasn't "The Bidcage" a remake of the French film "La Cage Aux Folles" in the 1970's?

For me Nichols crowning achievements are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", "The Graduate", "Catch-22" and "Carnal Knowledge".

I'm a big fan of his , but won't see this because I can't sit through Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts on-screen.

Hi Spennies

I've heard a few positive comments about this film. I think it'll be a DVD one for me as Tom Hanks drives me batty.

Hey John,
Yes it was and the original play lasted a year on stage in Paris, 1978 I believe.
Opposite for me, as Hanks brought me to this movie. Roberts is easy to dislike in this movie, for sure.

Hi Tracy
thanks for the comment, this is a movie that I would recommend, no doubt.
