Review: Big Daddy (1999)
August 7th 2009 19:17
Originally released in the summer of 1999, “Big Daddy” stars Adam Sandler as Sonny Koufax, a bachelor in his early 30s who is having issues with growing up. Everything changes for Koufax when a five year old kid, named Julian, shows up at his doorstep. Julian is portrayed by twin brothers Cole and Dylan Sprouse. Julian is the son of Koufax’s roommate, Kevin Garrett (Jon Stewart). Garrett happens to be out of the country on a business trip. In a plot to impress his girlfriend, Koufax lies to social services, telling them he is Kevin Garrett, in order to gain custody of Julian.
“Big Daddy” brilliantly blends the serious subject of parenting with comedic undertones, thanks in part to a great cast. The “Big Daddy” cast includes names such as Joey Lauren Adams, Leslie Mann, Rob Schneider, and Steve Buscemi. Perhaps what makes “Big Daddy” so good is the colorful characters. From a homeless guy to two homosexual lawyers, “Big Daddy” has it all.
What I like most about “Big Daddy” is the film’s uniqueness. Even ten years after “Big Daddy” was released in theatres, the film has remained one of a kind. Too many comedies follow a cookie cutter production model but not “Big Daddy”. “Big Daddy” provides laughs while at the same time a touching plot. For this reason I consider “Big Daddy” a great comedy.
