Review: Airheads (1994)

There are a handful of films out there which I like so much I have trouble putting my appreciation for them into words. One of those films is Airheads. Airheads, originally released in 1994, stars Brendan Fraser (as Chaz), Steve Buscemi (as Rex), and Adam Sandler (as Pip). Together the three form a band called The Lone Rangers. In a desperate attempt to get notice in the music business the three break into KPPX Rebel Radio to get their single played on the air. After things start to go south the three pull out realistic looking water pistols and take the radio station hostage. Hilarity ensues from there.
Airheads is great on several levels. The filmmaking glues you to the plot. Throughout the entire movie Chaz is talking about how great his song is but yet you don’t hear the song until the final minutes of the film. By building up to the song the director keeps your interest in the movie.
The Airheads cast will leave you pointing at the screen going “oh, oh, do you know who that is?” and saying “that is (fill in name) from (fill in movie or TV show)”. Amongst the familiar faces are Chris Farley (star of Black Sheep and Tommy Boy), Michael Richards (Crammer from Seinfeld), and Judd Nelson (John Bender from The Breakfast Club).
The actor that sticks out the most to me in Airheads is Adam Sandler. To my knowledge Airheads was Adam Sandler’s first film. Airheads featured Adam Sandler before he became a household name. The star studded cast of Airheads reminds me the star studded cast in Adam Sandler’s newest film Funny People. Funny People stars the likes of Sandler (obviously), Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Leslie Mann. To read more about Funny People click here.
Getting back to Airheads, I think anyone who enjoys music would enjoy the film because of the plot. Adam Sandler fans would be interested in Airheads just because the Pip character is a lot different from any other character Sandler has portrayed. All together I would give Airheads two thumbs up.
