Review: Idiocracy (2006)

August 31st 2009 15:16
Idiocracy is the brain child of writer Mike Judge, the creative mind behind Office Space, “Beavis & Butthead”, and “King of the Hill”. Idiocracy stars Luke Wilson as Joe Bauers, an average man who participates in an army experiment. As a result of the experiment Joe finds himself 500 years in the future. In the future Joe is no longer average. In fact, intelligence has declined so much Joe has become the smartest man in the world. In the future people water their plants with a sports drink and good television is considered “Ow, My Balls!”, a show where men are kicked in the balls.

Idiocracy did not garner much success in the movie theatres. Idiocracy is pretty much considered a failure within the film industry. The movie doesn’t have fancy special effects or a well developed plot. However, Idiocracy does trigger this philosophical question- could humans become this stupid? In his time Joe didn’t do anything productive, like read and vote. In our world there are plenty of people who don’t read or vote. If intelligent activity continues to decline over the years, what will prevent the population from becoming ignorant?

Idiocracy is not worth purchasing on DVD but if you do get a chance to catch the movie on Comedy Central, watch the film and ask yourself- could this really happen? Then do your part is stop the ignorance.

Movie Review: Rocky II (1979)

August 20th 2009 15:57
This past weekend Spike TV had a Rocky Balboa marathon. I was able to find enough free time to sit down and enjoy Rocky II. In general, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is an iconic character in pop culture; but why? What separates Rocky from the ordinary? As I watched Rocky II the answer became clear to me.

Rocky Balboa is an iconic pop culture figure because Rocky Balboa is everyman. The Rocky Balboa character is relatable to the viewer. Everyone can sympathize with Rocky in one way or another. For example, I understand the frustration the Rock feels when the doctors tell him he can’t box anymore. I have a mild form of cerebral palsy and throughout my life I’ve been told what I can and can’t do too. I feel what Rocky Balboa feels!

Anyone who takes pride in who they are can sympathize with the Rock in Rocky II because of what Apollo does to attack Balboa’s pride. Rocky couldn’t just sit back and take that. He had to fight back; just like we have to fight back when somebody attacks our pride.

Rocky II is more than just a movie and Rocky Balboa is more than just a movie character. They are inspiration. I know after I was done watching Rocky II that I was motivated to push myself harder, in order to be the best I can be. Watching Rocky II woke up the Italian Stallion in me!

Review: Employee of the Month (2006)

August 11th 2009 00:18
Yesterday, while flipping through channels to see what was on television I came across “Employee of the Month” on Comedy Central. Released back in 2006 “Employee of the Month” stars Dane Cook as Zack Bradley, a lazy stock guy who works for Super Club. Zack once had ambition in life but after he lost his grandmother’s retirement money on his dot com start up business he decides to play life safe and only do the bare minimum in order to protect those around him from his failure.

At least that was the plan until Amy (Jessica Simpson) was transferred to Super Club. Rumors are Amy has a thing for guys who are employee of the month. The rumors are enough motivation for Zack to take a chance. Zack volunteers to become a cashier, launching him into competition with Vince (Dax Shepard). Vince, a diligent worker has been employee of the month 17 times in a row and was recently promoted to head cashier. Vince is hoping to win the employee of the month award for the unprecedented 18th time in a row

Review: Big Daddy (1999)

August 7th 2009 19:17
Originally released in the summer of 1999, “Big Daddy” stars Adam Sandler as Sonny Koufax, a bachelor in his early 30s who is having issues with growing up. Everything changes for Koufax when a five year old kid, named Julian, shows up at his doorstep. Julian is portrayed by twin brothers Cole and Dylan Sprouse. Julian is the son of Koufax’s roommate, Kevin Garrett (Jon Stewart). Garrett happens to be out of the country on a business trip. In a plot to impress his girlfriend, Koufax lies to social services, telling them he is Kevin Garrett, in order to gain custody of Julian.

Review: Airheads (1994)

August 1st 2009 21:45
There are a handful of films out there which I like so much I have trouble putting my appreciation for them into words. One of those films is Airheads. Airheads, originally released in 1994, stars Brendan Fraser (as Chaz), Steve Buscemi (as Rex), and Adam Sandler (as Pip). Together the three form a band called The Lone Rangers. In a desperate attempt to get notice in the music business the three break into KPPX Rebel Radio to get their single played on the air. After things start to go south the three pull out realistic looking water pistols and take the radio station hostage. Hilarity ensues from there.

Airheads is great on several levels. The filmmaking glues you to the plot. Throughout the entire movie Chaz is talking about how great his song is but yet you don’t hear the song until the final minutes of the film. By building up to the song the director keeps your interest in the movie
